Sobre Ambar

Ambar is a Portuguese stationery and office supplies brand, founded in Porto in 1939 by Américo Barbosa. The name comes from the first syllables of the founder's own — AMérico BARbosa — and the company started out in bookbinding, later widening into filing, writing and school supplies. It grew through the second half of the twentieth century, reaching a thousand employees in 1968, and rebuilt its factory from the ground up after a fire destroyed it in 1976. In 1996 Isabel Barbosa, the founder's daughter, took over the running of the company, and in 2004 it adopted its present name, Ambar – Ideias no Papel. The range is organized into four areas: school, office, home and ambarscience, the last of these given over to educational toys and games. It covers box files, notebooks, diaries, backpacks and pencil cases, along with a line of products designed around environmental concerns. The head office is in Barcelos and the factory remains in Porto, on Rua Manuel Pinto de Azevedo, in the Ramalde district. The company exports to more than twenty-five countries and has had a subsidiary in Spain since 1987.
