À Capucha is a design studio based in Porto, founded in 2013 by Maria Ruivo, Raquel Pais and Cecília Lages, which reinterprets the capucha — the hooded outer garment worn by Portuguese shepherds and farmers. The brand took a traditional piece of clothing as its starting point to design contemporary capes, keeping the original silhouette and function intact: resting on the head, the capucha leaves the movements free, keeps out the cold and protects from the rain. The pieces are made in burel, a thick Portuguese cloth, 100% wool and waterproof, and worked by hand by a group of artisans in Arões, in Vale de Cambra. The collection rests on models for men and for women, in a palette of colors studied down to the detail, and comes out in small runs or as one-off pieces — the studio does not work by season. Offcuts from earlier collections become accessories, and the work extends further into editorial projects, exhibitions and editions made in collaboration with other makers. The brand's stated purpose is to give new life to artisanal know-how without making it obsolete or subjecting it to impossible production rhythms. By keeping the connection between those who design and the hands that make each piece, À Capucha treats burel not as nostalgic matter but as a material capable of sustaining objects that are durable, functional and beautiful in contemporary life.
