+351 is a clothing brand based in Lisboa that produces every piece in the Norte de Portugal region, in 100% organic cotton. The name is the country's telephone dialing code, chosen by founder Ana Penha e Costa because it works graphically and is legible and pronounceable in any language. Ana Penha e Costa designed the concept while living in Rio de Janeiro, where she worked for brands such as Billabong and Osklen, and brought it back to Lisboa. The city and the nearness of the Atlantic still set the brand's register: surf, music and a relaxed everyday wardrobe. The collections are mostly unisex and run from T-shirts and sweatshirts to pants, shirts and jackets, keeping the link to the sea through the swimwear and the beach pieces. The cotton is grown without chemicals, and several of the knits used — corduroy, slub jersey and terry — are GOTS certified. Production runs in small batches, up to a hundred pieces per color each season, and much of the catalog is garment-dyed, a technique that gives every lot its own variation in tone. Beyond its own store in Lisboa, the brand is stocked by independent retailers across the country.
