Ach. Brito is a Portuguese soap and perfume house founded in Porto in 1918 by the brothers Achilles and Affonso de Brito. The company's roots run deeper still: they go back to Claus & Schweder, the country's first soap factory, set up in 1887, which Achilles de Brito joined in 1903 and became a partner of five years later. Since 2007 production has been based in Fajozes, in the municipality of Vila do Conde, where the company brings together the factory and a store open to the public. Soap making combines machine and hand — mixing, milling, extrusion, cutting and stamping, with packing done by hand on several of the lines. The catalog runs from scented soaps to eaux de cologne, hand creams, solid shampoos, shaving products, candles and laundry soaps. The graphic identity is part of the product: the labels and wrapping papers draw on Portuguese motifs — the azulejo tile, the galo de Barcelos rooster, the caravel — work the house has been developing since it set up its own lithography studio in the 1950s. Alongside the brand that carries its name, the group owns Claus Porto and Confiança. In 2022, after a period in which the capital was held by an investment fund, the company returned to the founding family's hands, with Aquiles de Brito, the founder's great-grandson, at its head.
