Castelbel was founded in 1999 in Castêlo da Maia, and that is where the name comes from: "Castel" from the place, "Bel" from beauty. It began by producing luxury scented soaps for an American brand and later moved to signing its own products — today soaps, body gels and lotions, hand creams, body mists, scented candles, diffusers, scented paper and home textiles. Handwork remains at the center of the process: the soaps are still wrapped by hand, one at a time. The brand also developed the technology behind its scented sachets, which are filled with Portuguese cork — it is the cork that releases the fragrance slowly. Alongside the Castelbel line runs Portus Cale, the house's premium range, with collections such as Gold & Blue, inspired by azulejo tilework, and Ruby Red, inspired by Vinho do Porto, Port wine. Production remains at the factory in Maia and reaches more than fifty countries, with the United Kingdom, the United States and Asia as its main destinations. Since 2024, Castelbel has been part of Grupo BR Investments.
