Cerveja Artesanal Barona was founded in 2015 by three partners from Castelo de Vide — Diogo Barrigas, Rui Roque and João Nabo — whose surnames gave the brand its name: BA, RO, NA. Production later moved from home scale to a microbrewery in Santo António das Areias, in the municipality of Marvão, in the Alto Alentejo. The range runs through distinct styles. The Seara is a light pale lager, low in alcohol, designed for the heat of the Alentejo wheat fields; the Blonde is a soft ale with floral aromas; the APA plays on the tropical fruit of the hops; the IPA is a red IPA of citrus, pine and a caramel finish; and the Porter crosses the English tradition with the American, with coffee and dark chocolate. The Entrudo is a tropical sour ale, and the Boleima, made in partnership with Cervejeira Burra, translates a typical Alto Alentejo cake into beer, with caramel, biscuit, apple and cinnamon. There is also a smoked brown ale made with DOP chestnuts from Marvão. The beers have been collecting international awards since 2016. At the 2019 World Beer Awards they took three national categories — best american pale ale, best specialty IPA and best strong porter — alongside gold at the Barcelona Beer Challenge in 2018 and 2019, gold at the Ibeerian Awards in 2016 and 2017 and silver at the Concours International de Lyon. The brand also has a taproom of its own, in Castelo de Vide.
