Couto is a Portuguese hygiene and personal care house founded in Porto in 1918, today with its head office and laboratory in Vila Nova de Gaia and a store of its own on Rua de Cedofeita, in Porto. It started out as Flôres e Couto and entered Portuguese homes in 1932 with Pasta Medicinal Couto — a toothpaste formulated to treat gum problems, as recognizable for its old-typography packaging as for the product itself. The design was never modernized and is today part of the brand's graphic heritage, along with the advertising campaigns that made it familiar to several generations. Around the toothpaste grew a broad range of daily care: mouthwash, soaps and bath bars, shampoos, deodorant cream, hand and face creams, eau de cologne, shaving cream and aftershave, beard oil and beard shampoo, the Olex hair restorer, pure petroleum jelly and hydrogen peroxide. Production remains semi-artisanal and is carried out in Vila Nova de Gaia. Alberto Gomes da Silva, who ran the company for decades, died in May 2023; direction has since passed to Alexandra Gomes da Silva.
