Cubanas is a Portuguese footwear and accessories brand founded in 2005, its name drawn from the joy and the vivid colors it associates with the Cuban people — a register that still runs through the palette and the design of its collections. It began with shoes and later widened the range to bags, hats and other accessories. Production is done by hand in small Portuguese factories, with natural leathers and chrome-free linings. The brand draws on Portuguese raw materials that are hard to find in other markets: cork, Portuguese sheep's wool and burel, the felted wool of the Serra da Estrela, which give rise to lines of their own such as Exclusive Burel and the Arraiolos Collection, the latter inspired by Alentejo rugs. On the environmental side, Cubanas states that all its manufacturing processes run on energy from renewable sources, that its rubber is obtained from recyclable materials, and that production is built on minimal water use and lower-impact chemicals. The catalog covers sandals, sneakers, boots, rain boots and espadrilles, and the brand keeps a store of its own in Chiado, in Lisboa.
