Just Burel is a Portuguese brand of footwear and hats in burel, the carded wool cloth traditionally worn by the shepherds of the Serra da Estrela. The project started in 2019, run by the third generation of a Covilhã family with roots in the wool trade, with the intention of putting burel to a use tradition had not reserved for it. The wool is Portuguese and the cloth is made by traditional methods in the Serra da Estrela region; assembly is in the hands of artisans with decades of experience in footwear and hat-making, and every piece comes out unique. The range began with footwear — boots and casual shoes, including children's models — and later widened to hats, with berets, caps, fedoras and panama hats, and further to scarves, wallets, women's capes and cushions for the home. Alongside burel, the brand also works with merino wool and tweed. Inside the footwear is a technical microfiber that regulates temperature and helps perspiration evaporate, to keep the foot dry — a detail that brings an old material up against a contemporary demand.
