Sobre Matta
Matta is a Portuguese surfboard brand, founded in 1996 by Nuno Matta. Nuno Matta was one of the best Portuguese competitors of the 1990s, with several national titles and a presence on the European EPSA circuit, and belonged to the first generation of professional surfing in Portugal. The brand began when he traded his bicycle for ten foam blanks and set up a shaping workshop in his grandmother's back yard. His work as a shaper led him to collaborate with leading names in international board shaping, among them Ricardo Martins, Jason Koons, Joca Secco, Xanadu, John Pyzel and Bill Johnson. More than twenty-five years on, Matta is one of the most visible board makers in Europe, with a workshop he himself describes as small enough to look after every piece. The workshop is in Sobreda, in Caparica, in the municipality of Almada. The range brings together several models — among them the J5, the TLX, the SMP 2, the MTM, the TTT, the Gravy and the Lekker — alongside custom orders and the SMARTech foam technology. The company also runs Upcycle, a program for putting used boards back into service.
