Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, founded on 10 September 1756 by royal charter of King José I, as part of the Marquês de Pombal's policy for the Douro. It was created to bring order to the production and trade of vinho do Porto and to demarcate the area of origin — the first undertaking of its kind anywhere in the world — and it has traded without interruption ever since. Since 1960, when Manuel da Silva Reis acquired the majority of the capital, the company has belonged to the Silva Reis family; Pedro Silva Reis took over as chairman in 2002. It owns five quintas in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro — Carvalhas, Cidrô, Aciprestes, Casal da Granja and Síbio — amounting to 557 hectares of its own vineyard, alongside a winery in Régua. It produces vinho do Porto and Douro DOC wine, as well as wines from other regions, under labels with decades of history behind them: Porca de Murça, Evel, Grandjó, Fundador and Quinta das Carvalhas. The head office and ageing cellars are in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the company museum is also housed. Quinta das Carvalhas, in Pinhão, is open to visitors and is one of the most sought-after wine tourism destinations in the Douro.
