Toino Abel makes rush basketry in Castanheira, in the municipality of Alcobaça — a village where the technique has been practiced for more than five hundred years, a few kilometers from Nazaré. The brand was founded in 2010 by Nuno Henriques, who named it after his grandfather. Natural rush is braided by hand, piece by piece, and becomes bags and baskets, some with leather finishing. In 2017 the brand moved to weaving entirely in its own atelier, with a small team of artisans on employment contracts, with insurance and access to healthcare — the way it found to make the craft viable for anyone taking it up now. The atelier receives visitors by appointment. On the same property stands Casa Abel, a country house built in 1945 by Nuno's grandfather, today used for accommodation and for basketry experiences.
