B-MUM designs and manufactures crib sheets with an integrated safety system in Portugal. The SafetyBabyBed, the product the brand grew out of, is a patented set whose adjustable system — three lateral positions and two between the baby's legs — keeps the child lying on its back and stops it sliding down the bed or pulling the sheet over its head. It comes in 50x80, 60x120 and 70x140 cm, in 100% percale cotton at 200 threads/cm², with Oeko-Tex class I certification and test reports from CATIM. The brand was born in Guimarães out of the experience of Mónica Ferreira, who looked for a practical answer to the safe-sleep advice she was given through two pregnancies. Development was supported by the pediatrics and neonatology department of the Hospital de Guimarães, by TecMinho – Universidade do Minho and by CITEVE, and the project passed through TecMinho's IdeaLab and Laboratório de Empresas programs before reaching the market in 2017. The following year it won first prize in the NETT program and was presented at Kind + Jugend, in Colónia (Cologne). The brand is clear about the product's scope: the SafetyBabyBed does not prevent sudden infant death syndrome. What it does is act on two of the associated risk factors — sleeping position and the risk of suffocation from bedding. Around this system, B-MUM has widened the range with the Easy Baby Bed, for children from 12 months, a waterproof version of the safety system, and accessories such as duvets and mattress protectors.
