Sobre Blackcork
Blackcork is Sofalca's contemporary furniture brand, created in 2014 to take expanded black cork out of insulation and into designer furniture. Sofalca has been producing expanded cork agglomerate since 1966 at its factory in Bemposta, Abrantes, set in the middle of the cork oak montado, right beside the raw material. Under the creative direction of Toni Grilo, the brand brought together a new generation of designers — among them Daniel Vieira, Gonçalo Campos, Luís Nascimento and Manuel Vital — around a single material. The collection runs through chairs, benches, tables and console tables, pendant, table and floor lamps, mirrors and acoustic screens, in families such as FALCA, CUT, OMEGA, CACAO, FRAME, BOOLEAN and EXO. It is the material that sets the brand apart. Only falca cork is used — the cork of the branches — turned into granules and bound in an autoclave by injecting steam: it is the cork's own resins that bind the granules, in a process that is 100% natural and free of additives, the same process that gives the agglomerate its characteristic dark color. Production is energy self-sufficient for 95% of its needs, from the biomass the manufacturing itself generates — cork dust, which has replaced naphtha as fuel. Sofalca was the first company in the Portuguese cork sector to install a mixed-fuel boiler plant. So alongside the material's thermal, acoustic and anti-vibration performance sits an industrial process designed from the ground up to consume its own waste.
