Casa Cubista is a homeware brand based in Olhão, in the Algarve, which designs modern pieces made by hand by artisans and small family workshops across Portugal. It was created in 2016 by David Pimentel, who grew up in Canada in a Portuguese-Azorean family of weavers, crochet makers, bakers and joiners, and by Arren Williams, with a background in design, interiors and photography. The name comes from the architecture of the town itself — the whitewashed, tiled facades, cubic in volume, of the narrow streets of Olhão's old center. The range covers red clay tableware and ceramics, rugs, cushions, wall hangings, handmade tiles, woven cane chairs, lamps, pieces turned in Portuguese oak and chestnut, and linen cloths woven on wooden looms. Each family of products comes from a different workshop: a potter whose family has worked clay for more than two hundred years, a family spinning mill that spins recycled yarn from the fashion industry, two brothers who make tiles with techniques refined in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a weaver who works on looms more than a hundred years old. The result is what the brand calls handmade modern — contemporary design built on traditional crafts — and it reaches stores around the world today.
