Ecolã is one of the oldest Portuguese brands of artisanal wool textiles, rooted in Manteigas, Serra da Estrela, since 1925. Now in its third generation, it is the oldest certified Unidade Produtiva Artesanal (UPA), or artisanal production unit, in Portugal — a distinction that reflects a century of dedication to the textile craft of these mountains. What sets Ecolã apart is its command of the whole wool cycle: from the shearing of the Bordaleira da Serra da Estrela sheep through to the finished product, the entire process is handled in-house, on an ecological basis and without recourse to chemicals. The wool is washed, carded, spun and woven by the traditional methods the Manteigas region spent centuries refining, in the Vale Glaciário do Zêzere, at the heart of the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela. The result is 100% natural wool blankets, interior textiles and decorative pieces of recognized quality and unmistakable character. Ecolã produces patterns ranging from the traditional and rustic to the contemporary and minimalist — pieces of surprising visual impact that are functional and decorative at once. Sustainable by nature: the by-products of production are reused as animal feed, and nothing goes to waste.
