Sobre Herdmar

Herdmar is one of the largest producers of table cutlery in the world, founded in 1911 by Manoel Marques in a mill on the banks of the river Ave. In 1919 production moved to Caldas das Taipas, in the municipality of Guimarães, and since 2002 it has occupied premises of its own in Barco, in the same area — the historic heart of Portuguese cutlery. The business has stayed in the family for more than a century: Abel and José Marques succeeded the founder in 1959, the third generation joined the company in 1996, and the fourth generation took over its management in 2020. To the cutlery it has made from the outset, it added a line of stainless steel dishes and utensils between the 1960s and the 1970s. The brand describes its approach as democratic design — the idea that a piece of cutlery complements the table rather than being merely a utensil — and works with designers on collections that have earned it international recognition, among it the iF Design Award, the German Design Award and the Red Dot Award. The entire production process takes place in Guimarães and most of the output goes to export. The company has held ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification since 2020 and received the Gold Medal for Industrial Merit in 2002.
