Laboratório d’Estórias is a Portuguese design brand, founded in June 2013 in Caldas da Rainha by Rute Rosa and Sérgio Vieira, both trained in design. The work starts from two materials: the ceramics of Caldas and the stories of Portuguese popular culture. Each piece retells a legend, an episode or a figure, and draws on local techniques rather than merely citing them as reference. The brand also recovers the memory of ceramicists from the region, such as Maria dos Cacos. Production follows a deliberately slow rhythm — two new pieces a year — and the first was a ceramic manjerico, the basil pot that fills the streets in June and which the studio took as its starting point. Ceramics, illustration and writing all enter the same object: the pieces are decorative, but carry the text of the story that gave rise to them, which makes them as much something for the home as something to read.
