Olaio is a Portuguese furniture brand founded in 1886, when the cabinetmaker José Olaio opened a workshop on Rua da Atalaia, in Bairro Alto, in Lisboa. In 1939 the company opened the Bobadela factory, in Sacavém, which at its height employed around 500 people. From the mid-1930s to the late 1980s, Olaio furniture was in Portuguese homes, but also in post offices, hospitals, schools, ministries, hotels, theaters, cafes, Portuguese cinema and Parliament itself. The company left the family's hands in 1987 and closed in 1998. In 2016 the fourth generation relaunched the brand. The work started from the original drawings recovered when the factory was dismantled and from the memories of former workers, and involved a technical update of the mid-twentieth-century models — among them the Capri reclining armchair of 1954, the Caravela, Forma and Brasil chairs, and the Báltico desk, in production since 1965. The pieces are made by hand in Portugal, by artisans who specialize in woodwork, in ash, walnut and oak, with finishes that include cane webbing, braided cord, marble and upholstery. Each model has a standard version and a very wide range of variations, produced to order. Alongside sales to the public, Olaio furnishes architecture and hospitality projects: Henrique Sá Pessoa's Alma restaurant, the Bairro Alto Hotel and Bar Douro in Londres (London) are among the spaces that have chosen its chairs.
