Salsa is a Portuguese denim brand, founded in 1994 in Vila Nova de Famalicão. It was born inside Grupo IVN, which had entered textiles in 1987 as a laundry and dyeing works and extended into garment manufacturing in 1990. The brand was created by three siblings — António, Beatriz and Filipe Vila Nova — and the name came from a film that was recent at the time. The first store opened in 1998 at NorteShopping, in Porto, followed by Lisboa and Braga the year after. The Ribeirão factory, in the municipality where the company is based, produces around a million pairs of trousers a year, and the brand keeps its own manufacturing rather than subcontracting it entirely. In 2016 Sonae bought half the capital from the Vila Nova family and, in 2020, acquired the remainder, taking full ownership of the brand. Denim remains the center of the offering, joined by tops and accessories, with a presence in around fifty markets and a network combining its own stores and multi-brand retail.
