Sobre Torres Novas
Torres Novas is a Portuguese bath textiles brand, originating in the Companhia Nacional de Fiação e Tecidos de Torres Novas, founded on 2 October 1845 by a group of merchants from Lisboa. The mill began by spinning linen, jute and cotton and producing canvas, and grew into one of the largest plants in Portuguese manufacturing. In 1949 it was bought by António de Medeiros e Almeida, who drove its modernization, and in 1972 it started making bath towels and other terry goods — the product that fixed the brand's name in the memory of Portuguese households. The company did not survive the shift of orders to Asia, nor the financial crisis that followed, and went bankrupt in 2011. The brand was off the market for a decade until it was relaunched by a group of entrepreneurs, backed by a former principal shareholder, returning to the same specialty. The products are made from cotton and biodegradable natural fibers, with no polyester or other plastics.
