Victoria Handmade celebrates the tradition of rush basketry, a Portuguese family craft going back to 1952. The brand was founded by Esperança Vitória — granddaughter of Vitória Brites and daughter of Toino da Vitória and Maria Manuela — who left a 14-year career to rescue this craft from the brink of extinction and to honor her parents. Based in Porto de Mós, in the district of Leiria, each basket bag is made entirely by hand, taking 8 to 16 hours per piece, combining traditional weaving techniques with leather detailing. The rush is harvested once a year, in the wild and without pesticides, in Portugal's wetlands; the leather is reclaimed from the food industry and vegetable-tanned, and the stitching is done with jute thread. Esperança Vitória holds a recognized Cartão de Artesão and Unidade Produtiva Artesanal — the Portuguese artisan's card and artisanal production unit certifications — and ensures fair working conditions for those who weave alongside her. The pieces — from the Aurora, Heritage, Linhagem and Picnic collections to the Lusitana Tote — extend into the home as well, with a line of decor and Portuguese blankets. Each basket is a tribute to the memory of the founder's mother and to the tireless work of her father, who always fought to keep this craft alive.
