Arrabidine was born at the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida — the Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida — opened in 1542, where the Arrábida friars are said to have drawn on the flora of the mountains to compose a liqueur with digestive properties. When the religious orders were dissolved in 1834, the friar who made the liqueur was taken in by a family from the surrounding area, who inherited the formula and gave it the name it goes by today — the date the brand marks on its special edition bottles. In 1950 Emídio Fortuna, of Quinta do Anjo, bought the formula and the holdings that came with it: the last original bottles and the vats where the liqueur still rests. That same year he registered the Arrabidine – Segredo dos Monges da Arrábida trademark. The liqueurs were always a sideline to soft drinks, the family's main business, and in the mid-1980s commercial production stopped — though the house never stopped making it for its own use. The return to market came in 2012, when Sofia Lima Fortuna, Emídio's granddaughter, set up Lima Fortuna with her father, Duarte Fortuna, as master liqueur-maker. A LEADER project, co-financed by the FEADER, brought back both the liqueur and the building that is today the Casa do Arrabidine, at Quinta do Anjo, in Palmela, where production takes place. The range was later joined by Bicabagaço, a marc spirit with coffee, Conheço-te de Ginjeira, made from wild galega sour cherries picked in the Serra do Louro, and Arrabidine Gin. The house also produces chocolate truffles and gift hampers, and receives visitors for tastings in the ageing cellar.
