Ramirez is the oldest canned fish factory still operating in the world, founded in 1853 in Vila Real de Santo António and today based in Lavra, in the municipality of Matosinhos. Sebastián Ramirez settled in the Algarve in the middle of the nineteenth century and set up a jute and fish canning operation. Five generations later, the company is still in the family's hands and has since shifted its center of gravity to the Norte: the Ramirez 1853 factory, opened in Lavra in 2015, is the most recent of the several plants the brand has had along the way, between Vila Real de Santo António, Olhão, Albufeira, Setúbal, Peniche and Matosinhos. The catalog covers tuna, sardine, mackerel, cod, squid, octopus, mussels and anchovy fillets, in olive oil, escabeche or seasoned sauces, and includes ready-to-eat dishes such as cod with chickpeas or tuna with vegetables. Alongside its own brand, the house owns fourteen international brands — among them Cocagne, The Queen of the Coast, La Rose, Pescador and Renommée — and is present in more than fifty markets. The sardine fishery that supplies the cannery is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, and the company was the first Portuguese firm in the sector to obtain Moody approval for ecological labeling.
